Gilman, Caroline Howard, 1794-1888

Successful author and editor who settled in Charleston, S.C., ca. 1819; native of Boston, Mass.; ca. 1833, Gilman began publishing a literary magazine at various times known as Rose Bud, Youth's Gazette, Southern Rose Bud, and Southern Rose; wife of Samuel Gilman (1791-1858), minister of Charleston's Unitarian Church, 1819 to 1858. She lived in Charleston until 1870, when she returned to Cambridge, Mass. She died, 1888, in Washington, D.C.
