Robert Hamilton, son of John Hamilton, was born in East Lothian, Scotland, about 1749. In 1778 he came to Montreal as an employee of the Ellices; in 1779 was on Carleton Island; the next, year removed to Niagara, and later founded Queenston, Ont. He was a man of much ability and one of the leading characters of Upper Canada. His fortune was estimated at £200,000.
