James Aloysius Farley was Postmaster General from 1933-1940. Prior to and after this post, Farley was a force in the New York and the National Democratic Party. He worked on Franklin D. Roosevelt's first two campaigns; he opposed the third and resigned his cabinet post and Democratic National Committee Chairmanship in 1940. He retained his post as chair of the Democratic Party of New York until 1944. Lou Gehrig played his entire career with the New York Yankees (1923-1939). He was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1939.
