The pastiche ballad opera in 3 acts with libretto based on the play by Isaac Bickerstaff. Most of the music is by Arne, including six songs composed expressly for the opera, with additional selections from Giardini, Handel, "Mr. Barnard" (probably a pseudonym for King George III), and others. First performance Covent Garden, London, 8 December 1762. This version commissioned by Pennsylvania Pro Musica, 1976 and edited from two scores in reduction, published in 1763 and 1770. First concert performance of this version, Free Library of Philadelphia, 7 July 1976, Pennsylvania Pro Musica, Franklin B. Zimmerman conductor.--Cf. Fleisher Collection.
