Biographical notes:

Sir Edward Seymour, Viscount Beauchamp, Lord Protector and uncle of Edward VI, was created Earl of Hertford in 1537 and later Duke of Somerset in 1546. The Duke was executed in January 1552 and his son, Edward Seymour, was later created Earl of Hertford by Elizabeth in 1558. The latter's grandson, William Seymour, secretly married Lady Arabella Stuart, cousin of James I, and was forced to flee the kingdom. During the Civil War Seymour supported the Crown and he was restored to the Dukedom of Somerset in 1660.
