Barnes was editor and foreign correspondent for the New York Herald Tribune, 1931-1948, with the Office of War Information, 1941-1944, editor of the New York Star, 1948-1949, and a book editor at Simon and Schuster, Publishers, 1951-1970. He also translated several books by Russian and Franch authors.
