Sudek, Joesef. Czechoslovakian Photographer. Born: Kolin, Bohemia (Czechoslovakia), 17 March 1896. Education: Kolin, until 1911; apprentice book binder, Prague, 1911-13; studied photography, under Karel Novak, State School of Graphic Arts, Prague, 1922-24. Military Service: Served in the Czech Army, in Italy, 1915-20 (wounded and hospitalized, 1917-20). Career: Independent photographer, Prague, 1920-76; Official City Photographer, Prague, 1928; worked as commercial advertising and portrait photographer, working with Druzstevni Prace publishing company, Prague, 1928-36; Coeditor and Illustrator, Panorama magazine, and later, Zijeme magazine, 1928-36. Member, Amateur Photographers Club, Prague, 1920-24; Founder-Member, with Jaromir Funke, and others, Czech Photographic Society, Prague, 1924. Recipient: Artists of Merit Award, Czech Government, 1961; Order of Work, Czech Government, 1966. Died: (in Prague) 15 September 1976.
