Sand, Maurice, 1823-1889

Maurice Sand was the eldest of George Sand's two children. He was a gifted artist and the pupil of Delacroix. Like his mother, he developed a passion for puppets and began in the 1840s to write puppet plays which were staged at the theatre, built specifically for private performances, at their home in Nohant. Maurice, who became an expert student of the commedia dell'arte, wrote the scenarios and designed the costumes. Over the years, the marionette plays became more sophisticated.
