Bloch, Ernest, 1880-1959

Composer, violinist, conductor, and photographer Ernest Bloch was born on July 24, 1880, in Geneva, Switzerland. In 1894 he began the study of music theory and composition with Emile Jacques-Dalcroze at the Geneva Conservatory of Music, who advised him to continue violin instruction under Louis Etienne-Reyer at the same institution. He studied violin under Franz SchoĢˆrg of the Royal Conservatory of Music, Belgium, in 1896, and composition in Frankfurt under Ivan Knorr from 1899 to 1901, whereupon he began two years of study of composition in Munich under Ludwig Thuille. He emigrated to the United States in 1916 where he taught and became associated with various music schools across the country and received a number of awards. Bloch died July 15, 1959, in Portland, Oregon.
