Born as Richard E. Powell on Nov. 14, 1904 in Mountain View, AR; former band vocalist, instrumentalist, and occasional MC, made film debut, 1932; featured in Warner Bros musicals in 1930s; made transition to dramatic roles, particularly private-eye heroes, in 1940s; became producer-director in 1950s and president of Four Star Television production company; married to Joan Blondell and June Allyson; died in 1963.
