Hartranft, John F., 1830-1889

On April 28, 1865 Major General John F. Hartranft was appointed military governor of the military prison at the U.S. Arsenal, Washington, D.C., and commander of the troops assembled for its defense. He was responsible for the incarceraton, treatment and eventual execution of the prisoners who were found guilty in the conspiracy to assassinate President Abraham Lincoln, Vice President Andrew Johnson, General Ulysses S. Grant and Secretary of State William H. Seward.
