Weyand, Fred C. (Fred Carlton), 1916-2010

Frederick Carlton Weyand (b. Sept. 15, 1916, Arbuckle, Calif.-d. Feb. 10, 2010, Hawaii), U.S. Army officer, graduated from university and received his commission through the ROTC program in 1938. In the early months of World War II, he was assigned to harbor defense service in San Francisco, and later served as assistant chief of staff of army forces in the China-Burma-India Theater. He was attached to the Military Intelligence Service in 1945 and 1946 and on the staff of U.S. Army Forces, Middle Pacific from 1946 to 1949. In 1950 he began duty with the 3rd Infantry Division in Korea, the next year commanding a battalion of the 7th Infantry in combat. During the 1950s he was military assistant to the Secretary of the Army, then stationed in Berlin for two years. He also served as chief legislative liaison officer for the Army in Washington, D.C. While commanding the 25th Infantry Division, he went to South Vietnam in 1966. The following year he became commander of the II Field Force, the senior U.S. commander in the Saigon area during the Tet offensive in early 1968. He was the last commander of American military operations in the Vietnam War in 1972 and 1973 and, until his retirement, served as the 28th U.S. Army Chief of Staff from 1974 to 1976.
