Gsell, Emile, 1838-1879

A French photographer born in Alsace in 1838, Emile Gsell was commissioned by Ernest Doudart de LagreĢe and Francis Garnier in 1866 to photograph Angkor Wat as part of their Mekong expedition. That same year Gsell opened a photographic studio in Saigon, which he operated until his death in 1879. He received a medal at the Vienna Universal Exposition of 1873.
