Chandler, F. W. (Francis Ward), 1844-1925.

Francis W. Chandler was an architect. Born in Boston, Ma., he attended the Lancaster Academy in Massachusetts and graduated in 1861. From 1862 to 1863, he served as a private in the Massachusetts Volunteers and then began studying architecture. From 1867 to 1869, Chandler was a student at the Atelier Daumet, Ecole de Beaux-Arts in Paris, France. After returning to Boston, he worked as an architect with Edward Clark Cabot. In 1888, he withdrew from the partnership to accept a position as Professor of Architecture at MIT; he later became head of his department. Chandler wrote a number of books on architecture. He was a member of the Boston Society of Architects and served as the architectural advisor to the mayor of Boston from 1896 to 1900. Chandler died in Boston on September 8, 1925.
