Fallows, James M.

James M. Fallows was born on August 2, 1949 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He received a B.A. from Harvard University in 1970 and a degree from Oxford University in 1972 in economic development. He worked as a staff editor for the Washington Monthly, 1972 to 1974; free-lance magazine writer, 1972 to 1976; and associate editor of the Texas Monthly, 1974 to 1976. From 1977 to 1979 he served as the chief Presidential Speech Writer for President Carter. Since 1979 he has worked for the Atlantic Monthly in a variety of positions, including Washington editor, 1979 to 1986, Asian correspondent, 1986 to 1990, Washington editor, 1990 to 1996, and national correspondent since 1998. Fallows also worked as an editor for U.S. News & World Report, 1996 to 1998, and since 1987 has been a national commentator for National Public Radio.
