Hendricks, Thomas A. (Thomas Andrews), 1819-1885
Hendricks was raised in Shelby County, Ind. He was admitted to the Indiana bar in 1843, served in the Indiana House (1848) and Senate (1849), followed by two terms in the U.S. House of Representatives (1851-1855), and was commissioner of the U.S. Land Office (1855-1859). He served in the U.S. Senate (1863-1869), was elected governor of Indiana in 1872, and was Vice President (1884) under Grover Cleveland. Hendricks died after nine months in that office.
