Republican United States Senator from New Hampshire, 1993-; born in Nashua, New Hampshire, 1947; elected to the Ninety-seventh and the three succeeding Congresses (January 3, 1981-January 3, 1989); was not a candidate for renomination in 1988, but was elected Governor of New Hampshire for the two-year term beginning January 5, 1989; elected to the United States Senate in 1992; reelected in 1998 for the term ending January 3, 2005.
