Lewis, Wilfrid Bennett, 1908-1987

Wilfrid Bennett Lewis (1908-1987), physicist, attended Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge, 1927-1930, and wrote his Ph.D. on the analysis of alpha-particle groups, 1934. He carried out research in radioactivity at the Cavendish Laboratory, Cambridge, 1934-1939, and became a Fellow of Gonville and Caius, 1934; University Demonstrator in Physics, 1935; and University Lecturer, 1937. He was Senior Scientific Officer at the Air Ministry Establishment (later Telecommunications Research Establishment), 1939; Principal Scientific Officer, 1940; Superintendent, 1943; and Chief Superintendent, 1945. He was made a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1945, and received a C.B.E. in 1946. Lewis became Director of the Division of Atomic Energy of the National Research Council of Canada, 1946; Vice-President of Research and Development of Atomic Energy of Canada Ltd, 1952; and Senior Vice-President, 1963-1973. He was made a Fellow of Royal Society of Canada in 1952, and became Professor of Science at Queen's University, Ontario, in 1973.
