Strutt, William, 1825-1915

William Stutt was an artist and draughtsman. He was born in 1825 and during the 1840s studied art in Paris. In 1850 he came to Australia and except for eighteen months spent in New Zealand, 1855-1856, he lived in Victoria until he retuned to England in 1862. He is noted for his paintings and drawings of personalities, including John Pascoe Fawkner, Sir Edward Macarthur and Robert O'Hara Burke, and of events, such as the bushfire at Macedon on 1851 Feb. 6, important in the early history of Victoria. After his return to England he continued to paint, notably religious pictures, almost up to the time of his death in 1915.
