1938 joined Dohbama Asi-ayone; 1938-1940 head office general secretary, Dohbama Asi-ayone; 1939 helped to found Bama-htwet-yat Ghine (Freedom Bloc); 1940 attended the Indian National Congress Assembly, Ramgarh, India; 1940 fled Burma after the British government issued a warrant for his arrest; 1941 returned to Burma, founded the Burma Independence Army (BIA) in Bangkok, Thailand; 1942 reformed the Burma Independence Army as the Burma Defence Army (BDA); 1943 war minister, Burma National Army (BMA); 1944 founded the Anti-Fascist Organisation (AFO); 1945 led the Burmese National Army in a revolt against the Japanese occupation; 1946 president of Anti-Fascist People's Freedom League (AFPFL); 1947 signed an agreement with British prime minister, Clement Atlee, guaranteeing Burma's independence within a year.
