Obrien, Edna

Edna O'Brien, novelist, short story writer, playwright, and screenwriter, was born December 15, 1932, in Tuamgraney, County Clare, Ireland. Educated first at the local national school and then in a convent, she escaped rural life by attending Pharmaceutical College in Dublin. In 1952, she eloped with Czech-Irish author Ernest GeĢbler. They moved first to County Wicklow, and then to London, where O'Brien has remained. They divorced after twelve years of marriage, and she raised their two sons alone.
