Edmonds, S. Emma E. (Sarah Emma Evelyn), 1841-1898
Born in St. Johns, New Brunswick in 1839, Sarah Emma Edmonds ran away from home as a teenager and assumed the identity of a man, Franklin Thompson. She enlisted in the Civil war in the 2nd Michigan Infantry in May, 1861. She served at the First Battle of Bull Run and later as a mail carrier. She contracted malaria in the Spring of 1863 and fearing she would be sent to the hospital where she would be discovered, she deserted on April 19, 1863. She was later granted an honorable discharge by the Secretary of War and a pension of 12.00 a month. She died at La Porte, Texas September 5, 1898. (from Woodford.
