Dexter, Andrew Alfred, 1809-1854

Civil engineer promoting development of railroads in South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, and elsewhere; trained as a civil engineer, Dexter surveyed the first railroad from Charleston, S.C. to Augusta, Ga., 1832-1833, and laid out the town of Aiken, S.C., where he met and married Sarah Williams, ca. 1834; Dexter became a cotton planter in Macon County (Ala.); died of yellow fever, 1854, while surveying a railroad from Mobile to New Orleans; son of Andrew Dexter (1779-1837), a native of Massachusetts who settled on the present site of Montgomery, Ala.
