Papers.Bragg, William Lawrence, Sir, 1890-1971.Papers.60,000.This collection consists of scientific and personal correspondence, scientific notebooks, texts of lectures, speeches and broadcasts, and reprints. Most of the correspondence dates from 1940 but there ae some earlier papers, notably a series of personal letters written during the 1914-1918 war. The collection includes correspondence with Edward Neville da Costa Andrade, Edward V. Appleton, William T. Astbury, John Desmond Bernal, Patrick M. S. Blackett, Niels Bohr, Max Born, A. J. There are however photocopies of letters written by him to G. Headley (his former schoolmaster) describing the progress of his researches. Hume-Rothery's total deafness required his colleagues to communicate to him in writing. Some of these conversation notes are separately preserved throughout the collection. An extensive correspondence of particular interest exists between Hume-Rothery and Charles Coulson relevant to Hume-Rothery's great interest in the electron theory of metals and its relevance to valency in particular and opposing merits of the Pauling treatment and the collective electron approach.
