Epithet: Australian Prime Minister
Born Valparaiso, Chile, arrived in Australia from New Zealand in the 1880s and worked as a compositor in Sydney; became President of the Australian Labour Federation 1893; entered Legislative Assembly 1894 as the member for Young; elected to Commonwealth House of Representatives for Bland 1901; Prime Minister of Australia April to August 1904. In 1910 he retired from politics.
