Papers, 1505-1958.Potocki family.Papers, 1505-1958.27 containers.Collection reflects a substantial part of the Count Potocki archives at Łancut Castle obtained by the Polish Institute of Arts and Sciences of America. Manorial records include documents and rescripts of inventories, charters, cadasters, judicial decrees, testaments, and title deeds; and personal papers including handwritten and signed letters, diaries, memoirs, and notebooks. These materials represent almost five hundred years of history, culture, and social life of one of the largest estates of pre- and post-partitioned Poland. They reflect the feudal economic system of Poland which was the basis for the wealth of the magnates and for the prerogatives of the ruling families. Illustrious Polish families represented in these papers and records are the Czartoryski, Lubomirski, Opalinski, Ossolinski, Ostrogski, Potocki, and Radziwiłł families. Correspondence includes that of J. Michalski, C. Norwid, W. Pol, S. Przylecki, R. Sanguszko, J. Sapieha, H. Sobieski, F. Szczerbicki, the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, D.W. Zasławski, and others. The papers reflect the high culture and sophistication of the nobility who formed an integral part not only of the history of Poland but also that of a great part of Europe.
