With his wife, Valentina, and mycologist Roger Heim, Wasson researched the ceremonial use of mushrooms by the Mazatec Indians of Mexico in the 1950's. Upon retiring in 1963, Wasson began Far Eastern field investigations relating to his thesis that the Indian soma plant was the Amanita muscaria.
