Sargent graduated from Harvard in 1862, taught horticulture at Harvard and was director of the Arnold Arboretum.
Dendrologist, first director of Arnold Arboretum, and professor of agriculture, 1879-1927.
Sargent (1841-1927) was appointed the first director of the Arnold Arboretum in 1873 and served until his death. During his administration the institution amassed close to 6,000 species and varieties of trees and shrubs. The library, the herbarium, and the program of travel and exploration that Sargent introduced further broadened the Arboretum's scientific importance. For further information see S.B. Sutton's book Charles Sprague Sargent and the Arnold Arboretum (Cambridge, Mass., Harvard University Press, 1970).
