Letters are bound in volumes organized by topic and entitled: Cosas de España, 1865-1889; Ornithology Northamptonshire & Midland-Counties (2 vols.), 1879-1891; Miscellania Zoologica (5 vols.), 1867-1892. A name index appears in the front of each volume. The letters document Lilford's study of the flora and fauna of Spain; his research into the natural history of Northamptonshire; his world-wide collecting of live specimens, bird skins, and eggs for his own collections and those of zoological institutions; and his involvement and that of others in the development of the field of ornithology in the 19th century. Writers of letters include Abel Chapman, Albert Edward Gunther, Gerald Lascelles, E. Delmé Radcliffe, Francis Henry Salvin, and R. B. Sharpe. Volumes also include clippings, bird lists, receipts for purchases of specimens, and printed and manuscript material relating to Lilford's membership in ornithological and zoological societies.
