Born in Moscow, Kar worked as a photographer in Alexandria and Cairo, Egypt before moving to London with her second husband, Victor Musgrave, and opening a studio there. Surrounded by artists, writers and other figures from the arts, Kar focused her camera on them, creating the bulk of her portraits from the mid-1950s to the early 1960s.
