The file contains materials related to rehearsal and performance, including a published copy (Berlin: Eduard Bloch, n.d.; Eduard Bloch's Theater-Correspondenz Nr. 88, second edition), which has been annotated as a prompt-book; and 7 handwritten role books, for the following parts: Peter Falk; Frau Freude; Adelgunde Falk; Johann Falk; Franziska Falk; Gustav Falk; and Senf, Diener. (The play has several additional roles: Charles Faucon, Tanzlehrer; Hippolyt Falk; Gottfried Lebrecht Falk; and Hieronymus Habicht, Zeitungs-Reporter.) The published copy, which probably dates from the early to mid 1880s, has a homemade cover that bears a stamp with the name and address of Theodor Bloch, who ran a theater lending library in Philadelphia; the title is listed in Bloch's catalog for his library, dated 1886 (see box 34). Two role books have covers made from the company paper of a milliner located in Philadelphia. Three role books bear the names of the actors who played the part (Rappel, Frank Stoertz, and Koenig) but the names could not be placed. (The collection's holdings of theater newspapers and playbills contain no reference to this play.) University of Pennsylvania Libraries, Van Pelt LibraryDibdin, Thomas, 1771-1841. (1) and (4) refer to Kean's success in Louis XI. In (3), Meadows mentions the success of "Pizarro." (5) refers to the "disgusting conduct of Mr. Ryder." Laments that this incident occured so close to Kean's withdrawal from management of the Princess's theatre. (6), to Mrs. Kean, is undated but refers to their professional "breaking up," a reference to the end of Charles Kean's management of the Princess's theatre. In (7), also to Mrs. Kean, he refers to the death of Charles Kean's mother and makes reference to the fifth commandment. (8), to Miss Chapman, is a letter of condolence upon the death of Charles Kean. Most letters written from The Grange, Brompton, with the exception of (3), from Stoke Devonport. (The play has about eight other characters.) The role book for Major von der Horst is stamped in three places: "Naumann & Rosenbaum Theater-Agenten / New York." It shows the subtitle for the play as "Schauspiel in fünf Acten," while the role book for ein Unbekannter shows the subtitle as "Schauspiel in fünf Aufzügen." The role book for ein Greis has what seems to be a prop list noted on the back cover. Names of actors written on the front of the role book for the Major seem to reflect 4 different casts over time. That item presumably dates from a somewhat earlier period than the other 2 role books, each of which bears just one actor's name. Three names considered together (Neumann, Serges, and Hirschburg, respectively) are recognizable from the casts of other German-language plays performed in Philadelphia, and could reflect a performance in the mid 1870s, or possibly later. (The collection's holdings of theater newspapers and playbills contain no reference to this play.) University of Pennsylvania Libraries, Van Pelt LibraryKotzebue, August von, 1761-1819. Texas Christian UniversityA'Becket family diaries and prompt books, 1840-1890A'Becket family diaries and prompt books 1840-1890The A'Becket Family Diaries and Prompt Books include handwritten memoirs and daily notations regarding the life and career of Thomas A'Becket, Sr. from 1844 to 1890. The diaries show the extent of A'Becket's theatrical activities. The diaries of his son, Thomas A'Becket, Jr. are primarily music related. These diaries span the years 1862 to 1880. The scripts and prompt books are sometimes annotated and sometimes unmarked and belonged to Thomas A'Becket, Sr. They span his career and some give information on the theater and year of the production. The collection appears to be a useful research source for detailing the life of a stock actor, writer and musician of the 19th century. A'Becket includes information on his work schedule and his travel schedule in the circuit theaters. Information as well, regarding his family, friends and acquaintances can be found in the diaries. The New York Public Library. The materials are accompanied by a paper sleeve that apparently was used to hold them together; it is labeled with the title of the play and secured with a red wax seal. The reverse of the sleeve bears a fragment of writing that may provide a clue to the provenance; included are the words "Grafen" and "Perutz" ("Perutz" might possibly refer to the locality in Bohemia known in Czech as Peruc and in German as Perutz). All of the materials likely date from before 1850. The role books are for the following parts: Graf Nolbeck; Wilhelm von Nolbeck; Rollman; Louise; Emmeline; Von Kork; Samuel; Paul, Bedienter; and Niklas, Kutscher. According to the sheet with notes on costume, the play has a tenth character, Oberland Marschal, the father of Emmeline. The sheet bearing the notes on set and props also contains comparable notes for another play, Der Gefangene, by August von Kotzebue (see folder 85). The collection's holdings of theater newspapers and playbills, which date from a later period, contain no references to either of these plays.
