A native of Vermillion County, Ind., Pyle was a journalist in LaPorte, Ind., Washington, D.C., and New York City. Pyle began a column as a roving reporter in 1935 for the N.Y. DAILY NEWS, and he served as a war correspondent during World War II. Pyle returned to the U.S. briefly in 1944, left for the Pacific Theater early in 1945, and was killed April 18, 1945, on an island off Okinawa.
Born Ernest Taylor Pyle in Dana, Indiana on August 3, 1900, he is best know as Ernie Pyle, journalist. He became a world-renowed war correspondent during World War II, covering the European, North African, and Pacific theatres. His style of journalism was personal and colorful. While he was covering the Pacific theatre, he was shot down by enemy fire on April 18, 1945 on the Ryukus Island of Ie-Jima, Japan.
Ernie Pyle was a correspondent of World War II. He was born in Dana, Indiana and worked on a farm before attending Indiana University where be majored in journalism. He quit during his senior year and soon after took a job with the Washington Daily News. Shortly after, he married and he and his wife traveled giving him fuel for his "Roving Reporter" column. In the 1939 bombing of Britain, he took his roving reporter skills to Europe and wrote about the disaster. After the beginning of the American involvement in the war, Pyle went back into action, this time on the front lines, capturing the stories of the average American GI in Europe, Africa and the Pacific. His column appeared in 400 daily and 300 weekly newspapers throughout the United States. On an assignment to the Pacific front in 1945, Pyle was shot and killed by a Japanese sniper on the island of Ie Shima.
Journalist.
American war correspondent in World War II.
Ernest Taylor Pyle (August 3, 1900-April 18, 1945) is best known as Ernie Pyle, an American journalist and war correspondent. He was born on a farm outside of Dana, Indiana, the first and only child of Will and Maria Pyle. He entered Indiana University in 1919. There he met Paige Cavanaugh, a life long friend.
Just a semester short of completing a degree in journalism, in 1923 he took a general reporting job at the La Porte Herald in Indiana. Three months later, he moved to Washington, D.C. to become a reporter for the Scripps-Howard Washington Daily News. Lee G. Miller, one of the paper's editors, would promote Ernie's career, later handle his business matters, and write a posthumous Pyle biography, The Story of Ernie Pyle.
While in Washington, he met Geraldine "Jerry" Siebolds. On July 7, 1925, they married, and in 1926 they quit their jobs to drive around the United States. After a brief employment detour with the New York Evening News, in Dec. 1927, Ernie Pyle returned to the Washington Daily News. In addition to his responsibilities as copy editor, he started the first daily aviation column in American journalism. Scripps-Howard made Pyle aviation editor for the entire chain, a position he held until 1932, when he became the managing editor of the Washington Daily News.
After traveling to recuperate from a severe flu illness, Pyle wrote eleven columns about his travels. G.B. (Deac) Parker, editor-in-chief, was impressed by Pyle's writing, and by 1935, Pyle began writing a national column for the Scripps-Howard Alliance group. He was to write six columns a week for distribution to twenty-four Scripps-Howard papers. Select columns were later compiled and published in the book, Home Country.
Initially, Jerry traveled with Ernie. Column readers knew her as "That Girl". She lived out of suitcases, retyped his copy, and offered praise and criticism of his work. Her life revolved around Ernie. By April of 1937, beginning with Ernie's extended trip to Alaska, they began spending more time apart.
While Ernie sailed to England in mid- November, 1940, to report on the Battle of Britain, Jerry oversaw the construction of their home in Albuquerque, N.M., built by Mount and McCollum Builders. Earl Mount and Edward Shaffer, editor-in-chief of the Albuquerque Tribune, and their wives were good friends of the Pyles.
Jerry's depression and attendant medical problems forced Pyle to take a leave of absence from Scripps-Howard in late 1941 to care for her. On April 14, 1942, with the concurrence of Jerry's doctors and family, Ernie and Jerry divorced. It was hoped the shock would help her deal with life. Ernie left open the possibility of remarriage, and they were remarried by proxy on 3/12/1943.
From mid-June 1942 until his death on April 18, 1945, with only a few breaks, Ernie Pyle covered World War II, from North Africa (Dec. 1942-June 1943), Sicily (July 1943-Sept. 1943), Italy (Dec. 1943-May 1944), France (June 1944-Sept. 1944), and the Pacific (Jan. 1945-Apr. 1945).
In this writing, by studying the men, he sent back a kind of detail unlike any other reporter. His wartime writings were compiled into four books: Ernie Pyle in England, Here is Your War, Brave Men and Last Chapter. He won the Pulitzer Prize in 1944 for distinguished war correspondence based on articles he wrote in 1943.
Ernie Pyle was killed instantly on April 18, 1945, while on patrol in Ie Shima, Japan, an island west of Okinawa. He was initially buried on the Ryukyus Island of Ie Shima (also, Ie Jima), but in 1949 was reburied in the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific in Honolulu.
Jerry Pyle died at St. Josephs Hospital in Albuquerque, November 23, 1945, of complications from influenza, and is buried in her home state near Afton, Minnesota.
Pyle's friend Paige Cavanaugh flew to Albuquerque to close out the Pyles' house. He retrieved bundles of letters Pyle had written Jerry over the years.
The City of Albuquerque acquired the Pyles' house on 900 Girard SE from the Pyle estate, and in 1948 the house opened to the public as the first branch library of the Albuquerque Public Library. In 2006, the house was designated a National Historic Landmark.

Keleher, William Aloysius, 1886-1972. William A. Keleher papers 1714-1999 (bulk 1915-1972)
Title:
William A. Keleher papers 1714-1999 (bulk 1915-1972)
The William A. Keleher collection is divided into 2 series, consisting primarily of documents created or collected by Keleher and his family. Most of the material pertains to Keleher's business and civic activities in Albuquerque and his research on territorial New Mexico. The first series, the W.A. Keleher Papers is divided into fourteen sub-series. Literary Works: Includes drafts, revisions and edited manuscripts, related research materials, and correspondence with agents and publishers. This subseries also contains newspaper clippings, rough drafts, proof sheets, notes, invoices, and scrapbooks containing letters and reviews. Files include information on/from Fabulous Frontier, Maxwell Land Grant, Memoirs, Turmoil in New Mexico, Violence in Lincoln County, and To Gila River and Rainbow Road. Miscellaneous Short Writings and Speeches: Aside from his full-length manuscripts, W.A. Keleher made his knowledge and opinions known through his speeches and shorter writings. As one of New Mexico's favorite sons, W.A. Keleher spoke frequently for groups throughout the state. Topics discussed range from patriotism to historical subjects similar to his full-length works. His short writings include newspaper articles and longer essays. Subject Files: Historical, Literary, and Political Figures: W.A. Keleher began these files but material was added by other family members after his death. This subseries contains clippings, pamphlets, letters, magazine articles, exhibit catalogs, genealogy material, and notes from W.A. Keleher's research on New Mexico. Included are materials about the infamous Billy the Kid and notable figures such as Governor Lindsey. There are four folders on Albert B. Fall and the Teapot Dome Scandal and some Civil War letters and notebooks from Peter Schaeffer of the Pennsylvania Volunteers. Also in this subseries are audio recordings of the Albuquerque Community Service "In Memory of Ernie Pyle" recorded on May 13, 1945 and of the Erna Fergusson Memorial Service recorded August 1, 1964. A notebook on water rights issues in New Mexico and Colorado compiled by attorney A. T. Rogers is found here as well. Subject Files: Places: This subseries includes information on institutions and areas primarily in New Mexico. For the most part, the files are filled with newspaper clippings and other types of similar media. The Albuquerque folder contains information on housing, business, city government, and health institutions. Subject Files: Events: This subseries includes clippings and other materials on court cases, major occurrences in New Mexico and the United States, and assorted research notebooks. National Archives Records: Violence in Lincoln County Research (1852-1960): This subseries contains negative photostats of documents from the Records of the Office of the Secretary of the Interior, Records of the Bureau of Indian Affairs and other departments relating to New Mexico Governors, Samuel B. Axtell, Lew Wallace and Edmund G. Ross. These records also pertain to Lincoln County, Colfax County, land issues, and Native Americans. Some material in this series is in Spanish. Index to William A. Keleher's Personal Book Collection: This is an index to W. A. Keleher's personal library and will prove useful to anyone researching W.A. Keleher's sources. Correspondence: Organized into several topics and alphabetized by name of sender or recipient. This includes business correspondence, legal correspondence, and research correspondence. The correspondence is valuable in clarifying W.A. Keleher's personal life and various public works and private enterprises. Some topics discussed amongst the correspondences include; W.A. Keleher's rumored run for the New Mexico Governorship, the New Mexico State Fair, and W.A. Keleher's work on book manuscripts while in Mexico, and the Public Service Company. Public Service and Business: This subseries contains materials related to W.A. Keleher's many involvements in public service and business. Amongst the more important organizations included is the New Mexico State Board of Finance. W.A. Keleher was appointed to the in 1933 and served through 1949. These records contain agendas and minutes of the meetings, correspondence, pamphlets, telegrams, budgets, reports from State Departments, and financial statements from various public institutions of higher education in New Mexico. Also in this series are records kept by the New Mexico College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts (NMCAMA) Board of Regents. Some documents relating to the Gallup Coal Strike of 1933 are in this subseries. Business material is from the Public Service Company of New Mexico, the Pubco Petroleum Company, and the Equitable Life Assurance Society of United States. Court Cases and/or Legal Career (1904-1948): Contains court dockets or calendars of cases Keleher handled mostly from 1916-1935. There are copies of exhibits for court cases, court transcripts, and a register of actions or law suits he handled. There are also records from 1927 to the early 1930's detailing the bankruptcy of the Cuba Extension Railroad Company in Sandoval County, New Mexico and its successors (Santa Fe Northern Railroad, Santa Fe San Juan and Northern). J. O. Seth's files concerning the Railroad bankruptcy are found here as well. W. A. Keleher was also General Counsel for the New Mexico Lumber and Timber Company. Scrapbooks: W.A. Keleher kept a collection of scrapbooks most of which either he or his family created. These scrapbooks are primarily filled with newspaper clippings. Some scrapbooks were given to W.A. Keleher by others and include clippings and other materials on prominent New Mexicans. The Hubbells and Armijos, for instance, left several scrapbooks with W.A. Keleher. Oversized Documents: Oversize materials range from newspaper clippings on Conrad Hilton to the Santa Fe Northern Railroad tax return. Also in the oversize documents are copies of and original awards and degrees received by W.A. Keleher. Maps and Plats: W.A. Keleher collected maps which served to support his research on New Mexico history. For the most part, these maps depict 19th century New Mexico and were created by federal agencies. The plats and prints are primarily of addition constructions in the Albuquerque area. W.A. Keleher was an active real estate owner and investor and these plats record part of that effort. Other prints illustrate New Mexico land grants and private land holdings. Personal Life: The series includes an extensive collection of newspaper clippings on W.A. Keleher's life. (Additional clippings can be found in several of the scrapbooks.) There are 2 audio CD's containing a private interview with W.A. Keleher conducted on October 5, 1963 by Barbara Simms. In the interview, he discusses his early years in Albuquerque and the many people he knew. Amongst those people he knew were; Neil B. Field, Elfego Baca, several University of New Mexico Presidents, and Clyde Tingley. This subseries also contains information on the organizations W.A. Keleher belonged to including the Knights of Columbus, Elks Club, Western Writers of America, and others. The second series is Keleher Family Papers. This series contains correspondence, clippings, and genealogical information about the Barrett and Keleher families. Invitations to social and political events illuminate the history of social life in Albuquerque, women's history, and the Kelehers' involvement in the community, pre-1950-1990. This series also contains information on various Albuquerque properties owned by the family, including the Altura Addition, Altura Shopping Center, Buena Vista Heights Addition, Huning Castle Addition, Mandell Business and Residence Addition, and other areas of Albuquerque. Also includes 1919 blueprints for the Keleher residence and a 1940 addition.

Discussing the student anti-war protests and their "right to speak or print four-letter words on the campus as well as off it;" saying that his "only reservation about this doesn't come from a censorious impulse, but one of conservation. We don't have many four-letter words of sturdy quality and when you use them up, there's no place to go. Also, overuse milks all the strength out of them;" relating the words of Ernie Pyle in Casablanca before he passed out.

Ambassador Auditorium Collection, 1974-1995
Title:
Ambassador Auditorium Collection 1974-1995
The Ambassador Auditorium Collection contains the files of the various organizational departments of the Ambassador Auditorium as well as audio and video recordings. The materials cover the entire time period of April 1974 through May 1995 when the Ambassador Auditorium was fully operational as an internationally recognized concert venue. The materials in this collection cover all aspects of concert production and presentation, including documentation of the concert artists and repertoire as well as many business documents, advertising, promotion and marketing files, correspondence, inter-office memos and negotiations with booking agents. The materials are widely varied and include concert program booklets, audio and video recordings, concert season planning materials, artist publicity materials, individual event files, posters, photographs, scrapbooks and original artwork used for publicity. Many of the print materials include handwritten comments from office personnel and administrators, and many of the artist photographs are autographed. Since the various office personnel maintained their own files, and the same information was often needed in more than one office at a time, the collection contains duplicate copies of many items. Although efforts were made to eliminate duplicate material from the same file or the same series, duplicate copies of items exist among the files from different offices. In an effort to maintain the original content of these files, the cross-file duplicate items were retained in the collection.
ArchivalResource: 636; containers of various sizes with multiple types of print materials, photographic materials, audio and video materials, realia, posters and original art work (682.05 linear feet).

History of Indiana University, 1968-1981
This project is a compilation of interviews of subjects with strong ties to and memories of Indiana University, primarily at the Bloomington campus. The interviewees include former students, faculty, and staff, among others. The information contained in the interviews generally spans a little more than the first half of the twentieth century and often deals with the administrations under presidents William Lowe Bryan and Herman B Wells. The project is a survey of Indiana University's history as a whole including information about various academic departments, athletics, student organizations, campus growth, university development, living conditions, segregation and the treatment of African-Americans, the administration, and the importance of jazz at Indiana University. In addition, the impact of specific events, such as the Great Depression, World War I, World War II, the Vietnam War, and water shortages, is detailed in many of the interviews in this project.

Title:
New York Times Company records. Arthur Hays Sulzberger papers 1823-1999
Arthur Hays Sulzberger was the publisher of xxThe New York Timesxx from 1935 until 1961 and chairman of the board of The New York Times Company from 1961 until 1968. While he was publisher, circulation of The Times almost doubled; the editorial page developed a reputation for strong opinions; news events were subjected to more analysis and coverage of specialized topics was strengthened; new sections and departments were created for food, fashion, and women; and the overall style of the paper became less rigid and more aesthetically pleasing. The papers document Sulzberger's life and career at xxThe New York Timesxx, with the majority of the collection relating to Sulzberger's 26 years as president and publisher of the paper. Included in the collection are correspondence with family members, friends, colleagues, world leaders, and other dignitaries; memoranda regarding the business of the newspaper, including Sulzberger's notes of praise and criticism to his editors, managers, and writers; reports on his meetings with world leaders, including Winston Churchill, Dwight D. Eisenhower, Franklin D. Roosevelt, and Harry S. Truman; and photographs of Sulzberger, his family, business trips, vacations, and The Times' buildings.
