Joseph Donath was a beekeeper and lived at Spring Mill, thirteen miles north of Philadelphia.

Son of Anton Donath and Anna Catharina Hübner, of St. Georgenthal in northern Bohemia (today: Jiřetín pod Jedlovou, Czech Republic), then part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire; university student in Prague from around 1772 to 1775. The individual named in the present items is evidently identical with the German-born Philadelphia merchant.

Title: Miscellaneous manuscripts, 1770-1796, n.d.

Handwritten documents belonging to Joseph Donath, including his baptismal certificate (in Latin, issued in 1770, regarding baptism in Feb. 1751); 3 items related to his course of studies at the Charles University of Prague (all in Latin, signed and sealed, dated ca. 1774-1775); and a signed statement by Joh. Wenzel Helzel (dated 1796), in which Helzel affirms that he is holding in safekeeping a marriage agreement (Heyraths contract) between Donath and Rosalia Jankin. The latter document is dated from Hayda, presumably Haida, in northern Bohemia (today: Nový Bor, Czech Republic). The baptismal certificate has a seal and is signed by Gottfried (Godefridus) Lissner, the pastor of the Church of the Holy Trinity (Trinitatis) in St. Georgenthal. The 6th item (undated and unsigned) is a proposed accounting scheme drafted on behalf of a woman identified only as the mother (die Mutter), at her request, evidently by one of her sons, for the purpose of making future provision for 2 minors (Unmündige), while shedding passive debts (passive Schulden); four individuals are identified by first name only: Anton, Joseph, Jacob, and Franz. Making reference to a law regulating care of minors (Vormundschafts Ordnung) that calls for a yearly accounting (jährliche Pupillartabelle), the document proposes a distribution of various parcels of land (Äcker), with the income (Raitung) from certain ones used to provide for the minors. On verso, an itemization of debts and assets is given in florin or gulden (symbol: f.), including a sum to be advanced (vorgestreckt) to Joseph.

This collection features original legal documents, marriage certificates, birth certificates, bills, and letters from Philadelphia, PA, England, and France. Many relate to Joseph Donath, a Philadelphia merchant and his son, James A. Donath, a Philadelphia lawyer. Also included are research materials collected by Mr. Maurice Brix, Philadelphia silver collector and scholar, for his book and other writings on Philadelphia silversmiths. The correspondence of Mr. and Mrs. Maurice Brix documents their association with other American silver collectors from 1906 to 1940. Alfred Coxe Prime, Robert Ensko, Hollis French, David Belasco, and Herbert DuPuy were among the more frequent correspondents. Numerous periodical clippings, photographs, and research notes pertain to early American silver objects and their makers. Photostats representing original manuscripts (1743-1804) document the work of silversmiths. Magazine articles on silver and pewter clipped from The Antiquarian and Antiques Magazine are also included.
