Born in Tupelo, Miss. in 1935, Elvis would someday be known as the "King of Rock-and-Roll". When he began recording in Memphis, Tenn. at Sun Studio in 1954, he turned the musical genre called Rockabilly into "Rock-and-Roll" although he also continued to record Gospel and Country music. For his remaining years he was continuously in the limelight making movies, recording songs and touring until the day he died in 1977 of a drug overdose at his "Graceland" mansion. He was only married once, to Priscilla Presley (1967-1973), they had a daughter, Lisa Marie.
Elvis Presley (1935-1977) was a highly influential musician and actor. Between 1956 and 1969, he starred in 31 films. Each film included songs by the actor, although not all were performed on-screen.
Elvis Presley (1935-1977), musician and actor, is famously known as the King of Rock and Roll. He was born in Tupelo, Miss., on January 8, 1935, to Vernon and Gladys Presley; the family moved to Memphis, Tenn., in 1948. In 1953, Presley recorded his first demos at Sun Records, a recording studio owned by Sam Phillips, who is largely credited for influencing American popular music and inventing the rockabilly sound that Presley made famous. Presley recorded more demos in 1954; his career took off quickly, and in November, 1955 Sun sold his contract to RCA in a deal arranged by Presley's new manager, Colonel Tom Parker. Presley quickly achieved iconic status after provocative national television appearances and hits such as Heartbreak Hotel, which had sold one million copies by March, 1956, and Hound Dog. Presley soon began to appear in motion pictures, and recorded songs for the films in which he starred.
As an actor, Presley appeared in 31 films between 1956 and 1969. While some roles were more serious than others, every film Presley appeared in featured several songs recorded by him, even if not performed in the movie. Presley completed four movies, including Love Me Tender and Jailhouse Rock, before joining the United States Army in 1958. He completed his tour of duty in 1960, and immediately began to make films again. His first movie after the army was G.I. Blues (1960), which produced a platinum album; other films include Blue Hawaii (1961), which featured the hit song Can't Help Falling in Love, Viva Las Vegas (1964), and Change of Habit (1969). Presley's recordings during this time were predominantly for movie soundtracks.
By the late 1960s, the films Presley acted in were neither commercially nor critically successful, causing his recording career to falter as well. Turning his attention back to singing and recording, Presley made his first live appearance since 1961 for a 1968 NBC television special. Shortly thereafter, he began to produce more successful records, including In the Ghetto and Suspicious Minds, and performed live on a regular basis. Presley was married in 1967 to Priscilla Beaulieu; their daughter Lisa Marie was born in 1968. In 1973, the couple divorced. Presley died in 1977 at his home, Graceland, in Memphis, Tenn.

Eugene Earle Collection, 1939-1980s
Title:
Eugene Earle Collection, 1939-1980s
Eugene Earle was born in Cleveland Heights, Ohio, in 1926. In addition to amassing a large collection of country and western, blues, and jazz sound recordings, he also became a discographer and a founder and president of the John Edwards Memorial Foundation (JEMF). Earle is also responsible for rediscovering and recording a number of country musicians, including Doc Watson, Jimmie Tarlton, and the Carolina Tarheels. The collection consists of recordings, films, images, and papers collected by Eugene Earle. The recordings consists of commercial and non-commercial transcription discs, audiocassettes, and open reel recordings documenting a wide array of radio programs and performers of blues, country music, jazz, old-time music, popular music, swing, and other types of music from 1939through the early 1980s. One series of the collection is government-sponsored Army V-Discs and Navy V-Discs from World War II. These discs were issued, October1943-May 1949, and feature material from a variety of sources, including special recording sessions, radio broadcasts, broadcast rehearsals, film soundtracks, and issued and un-issued commercial recordings. Along with the Armed Forces Radio Service, the V-Disc group was a morale-building unit that addressed the need for current music by the troops overseas. As V-Discs were produced exclusively for use by military personnel and the many artists who volunteered to perform on the recordings were adamant about the discs not being commercially sold or used, many of the V-Disc metal pressing parts were destroyed by the United States Army.Consequently, the V-Discs that survived document performances by artists unavailable on any other recordings. Other transcription discs are of the which aired on WSM radio in Nashville, Tenn.,1971-1974, and showcased some of the leading country music performers of the day;the ; and various government-sponsored radio shows, such as and Another series is comprised of open reel recordings, some documenting live performances of old time, country, and bluegrass musicians. They also include several private interviews with musicians. Other open reel recordings are dubbed copies of rare 78 rpm recordings, unreleased test recordings of early country and blues musicians, and transcription discs. There are also posters, audiocassettes, films, printed music, images, serials, papers relating to Earle's discographical and collecting activities, and promotional materials. Posters include full-sheet posters,half-sheet posters, and lobby cards for commercial feature-length motion pictures featuring country and western recording stars from the 1930s to the 1960s. Audiocassettes include commercial and non-commercial recordings of many early country, jazz, and Hawaiian musicians. Films consist of 16mm reels of early country and western artists and other topics. Printed music includes a number of song folios and sheet music, largely focused on Hawaiian and early country and western music, with a significant number of pre-1930 song sheets. Images consist of photographs, collectors' cards, and other images of country and western musicians and related subjects. Serials consist of journals and other publications pertaining to individual musicians, early radio stations, record collecting in general, fan clubs, and other topics. Papers relating to Earle's discographical and collecting activities include discographical research, tape logs, correspondence with record companies and other collectors, materials related to the John Edwards Memorial Foundation, record label catalogs, and extensive documentation of Earle's own vast record and research collection. Promotional materials include small flyers, picture cards, and other materials for commercial feature-length motion pictures featuring country and western recording stars from the 1930s to the 1960s. Performers significant in the collection appear as subject headings below. Ralph Emery Show, Lawrence Welk Show Country Roads, Navy Hoedown, Sounds of Solid Country, The Veterans Administration Presents Here's to Veterans, The United States Army Presents Country Express, The United States Air Force Presents Country Music Time, Country Cookin'.

Johnson, Gary,. Gary Johnson Collection, 1940-2003.
Title:
Gary Johnson Collection, 1940-2003.
The Gary Johnson Collection consists of six series: concert posters, 200 Motels Herb Cohen files, Zola Taylor, publications and press releases, the Beatles, flyers and handbills, and individual items related to Woody Guthrie, Nirvana, Elvis Presley, The Ramones, Elliot Smith, and Spinal Tap. The collection includes audio recordings, chord charts, clippings, financial and legal documents, 8mm film, flyers, handbills, magazines, manuscripts, posters, sheet music, and teletypes. The material spans 1940 to 2003, with bulk dates of 1965-1989. The collection provides extensive documentation on the promotion of regional rock and roll acts performing in the midwest and northwest of the United States from the mid-1960s to the early 1980s, as well as that of the punk and New Wave scene in Los Angeles in the 1980s. The production and release of the 1971 film 200 Motels is also well documented in the collection through Herb Cohen's files. There is also a nice selection of Beatles' 8mm films sold in the 1970s. Seen in a broader context, the collection provides insights to how regional acts were promoted and the venues they played, and serves as a reference to performers that played during that era. The collection also provides insights into the management side of the filmmaking process, the arrangement of live musical performance, the commercial viability of a band after they have disbanded, and reports of celebrity deaths by the press.

The Michael Ochs Collection spans the years 1948 to 1994, with the bulk of the material dating between 1975 and 1985. The documents pertain to Ochs' career as a rock and roll photographer, his career as a publicist for Columbia Records, the courses he taught at UCLA, and his radio programs. Some prominent artists featured in the collection include Ella Fitzgerald, Fleetwood Mac, Jimi Hendrix, Dean Martin, Elvis Presley, The Rolling Stones, Bob Seger, and Grace Slick. The collection provides rich documentation of both Ochs' role in the rock and roll music industry and a history of the rock and roll genre itself. Ochs' research and interviews provide intricate details for those interested in the history of rock and roll music.
