Biographical History

The English poet, playwright and novelist, John Masefield was born in 1878 in Ledbury. After running away to sea early (when he was thirteen) he settled in London from 1897 and devoted himself to writing. Later he moved to Oxford which was where he lived when most of the following collection was produced. Masefield became Poet Laureate in 1930 and was awarded the Order of Merit in 1935. Among his more notable works are, some early reflections of his maritime experiences in Salt Water Ballads (1902) and A Mainsail Haul (1905); The Tragedy of Pompey the Great (1910); The Widow in Bye Street (1912); Dauber (1913); Reynard the Fox (1919); Sard Harker (1924); Dead Ned (1938); and, Live and Kicking Ned (1939). The recipient of most of the pieces in this collection, Miss Mabel Cary Fogg, remains unidentified. John Masefield died in 1967.

John Masefield, English poet, author, scholar and poet laureate, is famous for his ballads of the sea based on personal experience. His best know work is "Reynard the Fox", 1919. He was appointed poet laureate, in 1930 and produced occasional pieces for 37 years. He was awarded honorary degrees from Oxford, Liverpool and St. Andrews universities.

Morgan & Company. She graduated from Smith College and earned a master's degree in philosophy from Columbia University. They met in February of 1916 while Masefield was lecturing in New York.

Masefield worked for the Daily Chronicle and later the Manchester Guardian; he served in France during the First World War, and worked for the British War Propaganda Bureau on his return. Masefield continued to write poetry and novels, and became a poet laureate in 1930. Works include 'Collected poems' 1923; 'Sard Harker' (1924); 'Odtaa' (1926); Dead Ned (1938), and his autobiography 'So long to learn' (1952) and Grace before ploughing' (1966).

English author John Masefield was orphaned at the age of thirteen, and worked a variety of odd jobs, including a stint as apprentice on the cargo ship Gilcruix, which made him familiar with the sea. He began publishing poetry, and his first book, Salt-water ballads, was an immediate success. During his long, prolific, and diverse career as an author, he wrote successful novels, juvenile stories, literary studies, drama, and autobiography, but is best known as a poet. His long, realistic, narrative poems were perhaps his most popular; he was England's poet laureate from 1930 until his death.
