Marschak was born on July 23, 1898 in Kiev, Russia; attended the Technical Institute of Kiev, 1916-18, and the Univ. of Berlin, 1919; received his doctorate at the Univ. of Heidelberg in 1922; taught at Heidelberg, Oxford, the Univ. of Chicago, and Yale Univ. before becoming a professor of economics and operations research at the UCLA Graduate School of Management in 1960; helped develop the information theory of economics and was a leading researcher in econometrics; published books include Economic theory of teams (1972) and Economic information, decision, and prediction : selected essays (c1974); nominated several times for a Nobel Prize; he died on July 27, 1977 in LA.
