Butterfield, Daniel, 1831-1901

Ambler was Judge of Probate at Pentwater (Mich.). Gen. Butterfield (Oct. 31, 1831-July 17, 1901) was the son of John and Malinda H.B. Butterfield. He was born in Utica (N.Y.) and graduated from Union College (1849) with a B.A. Butterfield enrolled as a Capt in the N.Y. militia, 1st regiment, later serving as Col. of the 12th Regiment. In 1861 he was appointed 1st Srgt. of the Clay Guards. He was promoted to Brig. Gen., Sept. 7, 1861, andd Maj. Gen., Dec. 13, 1862. In Jan. 1863 Butterfield became Hooker's chief of staff. He was severely wounded at Gettysburg. After recovering, Butterfield commanded the 3rd Div., 20th Army Corps on Sherman's march to the sea. Due to illness he was mustered out on Aug. 24, 1865. He the served as superintendent of general recruiting due to his status as Col. of the 5th Infantry, Regular Army. On Mar. 13, 1865 he was honored as Bvt. Maj. Gen. U.S. Army. He resigned on Mar. 14, 1870 to serve as Pres. Grant's U.S. assist. treasurer at N.Y. City. After his first wife of 20 yeaars died in 1877, Butterfield married Mrs. Julia James (Sept. 21, 1886). In 1892 he ran unsuccessfully for Congress. (Dictionary of American Biography pp. 372-4.) The Clarke Historical Library has two books by Butterfield.
