Biographical History

Walter Melville Robertson (b. June 15, 1888, Nelson County, Virginia-d. November 22, 1954, San Francisco, California) was an United States Army officer who achieved the rank of Major General during World War II. He was a 1912 graduate of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. He served in France during World War I and with the Occupation Forces in Germany until 1920. During World War II, he commanded the 2nd Infantry Division during the Battle of the Bulge, receiving the Distinguished Service Cross for his leadership. Beginning in June 1945, he commanded the XV Corps in the occupation of Austria and then Germany. From March 1946 until September 1947, he was Head of the U.S. Delegation to the Allied Control Commission, Bulgaria. Following that, he was a Deputy Commander of the Sixth U.S. Army until his retirement on June 30, 1950.
