Biographical History
Charles David Abbott was born in 1900 in Milfold, Delaware. He received a B.A. from Haverford College and a M.A. from Columbia University. A Rhodes Scholar, Abbott received a B. Litt. from Oxford University. His thesis was on Christopher Smart. Authored book, Howard Pyle: A Chronicle. Pyle and Smart were research interests for the rest of his life. He taught at the University of Buffalo (1927-1930) and the University of Colorado (1930-1934). He served as Director of Libraries at the University of Buffalo fom 1935 until 1960. He founded the Friends of Lockwood Library organization and the University Libraries' Poetry Collection. Abbott died in 1961.
Until 1935, the University Library was housed in various places on campus. The Law and Medical schools had and still have their own libraries. When the University moved to the Main Street campus, the library was housed in Hayes Hall and the Science Library was housed in Foster Hall and both were under the direction of Ruth Bartholomew. When Mr. and Mrs. Thomas B. Lockwood gave money for the construction of a library building in memory of their fathers.
