Henry A. Wise, from Accomack County, Virginia, was educated as a lawyer, and served in Congress, 1833-1844 as a Jacksonian Democrat. In a break with Jackson, he joined the Whigs. He enjoyed a long political career, serving as governor 1850-1860, and as a Confederate general. He was considered a great individualist in politics, and he found a kindred spirit in Fernando Wood, who had a genius for political organization, representing New York state in Congress and as mayor of New York City, spanning a career of forty years (1841-1881).
