James Lincoln Collier was born June 22, 1928 in New York City and graduated from Hamilton College with an AB in 1950. He worked as a writer and magazine editor before writing his first book for children and young adults, Battleground: The United States Army in World War II, in 1965. Throughout his career, James Lincoln Collier has written both non-fiction and fiction, including several books of historical fiction with his brother Christopher Collier. Their book My Brother Sam Is Dead was the Newbery Award runner-up in 1975 and received several other honors. Their historical fiction is praised for its careful research and accuracy as well as the authors' well-written and convincing plots and characters. James Lincoln Collier has also written several widely praised young adult and children's books including The Teddy Bear Habit (1967) that demonstrate his versatile writing style and ability to create an exciting and fast-paced story that combines suspense and humor. His fiction often focuses on his characters' moral dilemmas especially their conflicts with their parents. James Lincoln Collier's fiction sometimes focuses on an area of personal interest, jazz, a subject he has also written many well-received non-fiction books about including Inside Jazz ( 1973) and Louis Armstrong: An American Genius (1983).
