Biographical History
The island of Leyte, in Japanese hands, was the target for the American invasion of the Philippines in 1944. After a series of battles, the island was captured and the Japanese naval forces were defeated. U.S. forces now controlled the Pacific.
Douglas MacArthur was born in Arkansas and raised on a series of Army posts; his father, a Civil War veteran and career soldier, became one of the highest-ranking officers in the United States Army. Choosing a military career, MacArthur graduated with highest honors from West Point and distinguished himself in various posts. Exhibiting charisma and leadership during World War I he was promoted to Brigadier General, and later served in the Philippines and as Army Chief of Staff. During World War II, MacArthur commanded the Southwest Pacific Theater, and served as Allied Commander of the Japanese occupation, 1945-1951. He headed the United Nations forces in Korea, but was relieved of command, and a highly-publicized Senate investigation weakened his popularity. Always a controversial figure, he was generally considered a superior commander and loyal officer.
U.S. Army officer.
MacArthur was a U.S. Army general who led the United Nations forces in the Korean War (1950-1953).
General of the Army, Commander of Allied forces in the Southwest Pacific during World War II, and commander of the occupation forces of Japan and of United Nations forces in Korea.
General of the army, United States Army.
