Biographical History

African-American photographer; from 1846 operated studios in Cincinnati, Pittsburgh and Richmond.

J.P. Ball began work in photography in 1845 as a Southern itinerant photographer, settling in Cincinnati as a daguerreotypist in 1847, later establishing a photography parlor in N.Y. He was one of few Freemen of color documenting the pre-Civil War era. Ball used side lighting to illuminate his subjects.
