Biographical History

Geochemist and founding faculty member of University of California, San Diego, Seuss (1909-1993) had been research chemist, Hamburg, 1930s and had taken part in the German government's unsuccesful program to develop nuclear weapons during World War II. He immigrated to the U. S. after the war and worked for the U. S. Geological Survey, the University of Chicago, and as professor of chemistry at the University of California, San Diego (chemical kinetics, nuclear hot atom chemistry, cosmic abundances of nuclear species, nuclear shell structure, geologic age determinations and carbon-14 dating).

From the description of Papers, Ca. 1935-1990. (Unknown). WorldCat record id: 84429667

Austrian-born geochemist who pioneered radiocarbon dating techniques and was a founding faculty member of the University of California, San Diego.

Suess worked with Hans Jensen on the development of the nuclear shell model, a project for which Jensen later received a Nobel Prize. Suess's accomplishments include developing and improving radiocarbon dating and solving problems regarding the origin and synthesis of the elements. Suess was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1965, the V.M. Goldschmidt Medal in 1974, and the Leonard Medal of the International Meteoritical Society in 1977.
