Adlai E. Stevenson, governor of Illinois (1949-1953), Democratic candidate for president in 1952 and 1956, and United United States Ambassador to the United Nations (1961-1965), was born on February 5, 1900, and grew up in Bloomington, Illinois. A 1922 graduate of Princeton University, Stevenson practiced law before beginning his career of public service, which included stints with the Agricultural Adjustment Administration, United States Navy, Foreign Economic Administration, and as organizer of the United Nations. Stevenson was also active in political and benevolent organizations in Chicago, where he lived most of his adult life. He died on July 14, 1965.
Stevenson's 1952 presidential campaign involved an honorary committee of prominent citizens who supported him in this venture. Van Wyck Brooks served as a member of this committee.
