Biographical History

Mary Augusta Ward was an English writer, and wife of critic Humphry Ward. She began writing literary criticism, and soon progressed to writing novels. Although not stylistically distinguished, her novels were popular because they explored interesting questions of the day. Her earnest approach was admired, and her literary attempts to bring human drama to political, sociological, or religious issues continue to provide an interesting perspective on Victorian society.
