Charles E.A. Gayarré was a Louisiana jurist, planter, statesman, and historian. He was the author of historical and political writings, including his HISTORY OF LOUISIANA. Gayarré was appointed as Secretary of State of Louisiana in 1831. While in that office, he persuaded the legislature to purchase numerous foreign documents as the foundation for a state library. He helped found the Know-Nothing Party, also known as the American Party, in Louisiana, but was denied a place at the party's general council in Philadelphia because he was Catholic. He lived at Roncal Plantation in Tangipahoa Parish, La.

Charles Gayarré was an American politician and historian born in New Orleans, Louisiana. Mahlon Dickerson was Secretary of the Navy from 1834 to 1838, havng previously served as governor of New Jersey (1815-1817) and U.S. senator (1817-1833).
Charles Etienne Arthur Gayarré (1805-1895) was an American historian, specializing in the history of Louisiana. Educated as a lawyer in Philadelphia, he began legal practice in New Orleans in 1829. He married Annie Sullivan Buchanan. He served in the Louisiana House of Representatives and was elected to the United States Senate. Other posts included Attorney General of Louisiana, and Secretary of State of Louisiana. He conducted lengthy historical research by travelling in France and Spain. He served as president of the Louisiana Historical Society from 1860 to 1888.
