Samuel Wells Williams (1812-1884): missionary to China, 1833-1845; printer and author; helped prepare Chinese dictionary; accompanied Perry expedition to Japan as interpreter in 1853-1854; in 1856 became secretary and interpreter of the American Legation to China, and remained until 1876; in 1877 became professor of Chinese at Yale University.
