Irish nationalist and Premier of Victoria 1871-72. Duffy emigrated to Australia in 1855 and in the following year was elected to the Victorian Legislative Assembly. Between 1857 and 1865 he held various positions, including Minister of Lands, and in 1871 became Premier and Chief Secretary of Victoria. He remained in office for only twelve months but later became Speaker of the House of Assembly 1877-80.
