Göring was born in Prussia in 1893. Attended School of Cadets and in 1912 served with 4. Baden Infantry Regiment and the Prince Wilhelm no. 112 Regiment (1913-14). Became a flight observer with Reconnaissance Flight Detachment 25 (1914-15). Was trained as a pilot, wounded in battle of Somme (1916) and reassigned to a Pursuit Echelon (1916). In 1917 he was appointed commander of Pursuit Echelon 27, known as the Richthofen Squadron and promoted to 1st Lt. Received promotion to Brevet Captain (1920). Married Carin von Kantzow in Sweden and joined Hitler in 1922. In 1923 became leader of Hitler's Stormtroops. Was wounded in Nazi Beer Hall Putsch in 1923 and fled to Austria. Returned to Germany (1926) and worked in rebuilding the German Air Force. Appointed Reichsmarshall by Hitler in 1939. Died in 1946.

War crimes trial held (1945-1946) before an Allied military tribunal in which Axis leaders were tried for: crimes against peace, war crimes, crimes against humanity, and conspiracy.

On August 8, 1945, representatives of the U.S.S.R., U.S., France, and Gt. Britain signed the London Agreement that authorized the International Military Tribunal (IMT) to conduct a war crimes trial of Axis leaders.

The IMT trial began on Oct. 18, 1945 with 24 defendants all tried together. The defendants (and their sentences on one or more counts) were: Hermann Wilhelm Göring (death), Rudolf Hess (life imprisonment), Joachim von Ribbentrop (death), Robert Ley (suicide before sentencing), Wilhelm Keitel (death), Ernst Kaltenbrunner (death), Alfred Rosenberg (death), Hans Frank (death), Wilhelm Frick (death), Julius Streicher (death), Walter Funck (life imprisonment), Hjalmar Schacht (not guilty), Gustav Krupp von Bohlen und Halback (too ill to stand trial), Karl Dönitz (10 yrs.), Erich Raeder (life imprisonment), Baldur von Schirach (20 yrs.), Fritz Sauckel (death), Alfred Jodl (death), Martin Bormann (tried in absentia; death), Franz von Papen (not guilty), Arthur Seyss-Inquart (guilty), Albert Speer (20 yrs.), Constantin von Neurath (15 yrs.), and Hans Fritzsche (not guilty).
